Filing definitions related to manila file folders
File folders will have certain characteristics that make them unique from other file folders. Defining these characteristics will help you choose the file folders that work best for your office setting. Below is a list of most commonly used when choosing manila file folders.
Letter Size Folders
Letter-size folders are simply designed to hold 8-1/2" x 11" size sheet of paper. Letter-size folders are the most common size of file folder, overall. Most letter-size end tab folders will be 12"-1/4" wide by 9-1/2" high.
Legal File Folders
Legal file folders are not just for law firms-legal file folders are designed to hold 8-1/2" x 14" size paper. Legal file folders are commonly used with financial documents and legal documents.
Folder Weight
A folders weight can come in 9pt, 11pt, 14pt or 18pt. The higher the number, the thicker folder material will be. The most common weight folder is 11 point weight. We typically suggest 14pt to our customers because the heavier folder last much longer and give you better value.
Folder Tabs
File folder tabs will have different cuts and are either standard (Single-Ply) or reinforced (Double-Ply). Reinforced tabs have the material folded back on to itself. Tabs are either straight cut (the whole length of the tab) or cut into multiple tabs such as 1/3-cut, 1/2-cut etc. In end tab applications where the folder tab is at the side, a straight-cut tab is most common.
